Klemmi's Knowledge

A short guide to what you should know about interlocking bricks.

Klemmi, the mascot
What are interlocking bricks?

Plastic bricks with studs on top and tubes underneath that stick together by friction. Many manufacturers make them, and most follow the 8 mm stud grid.

The stud grid

The distance from stud to stud decides whether bricks fit. The standard is 8 mm. Large-grid bricks with 16 mm are meant for small children and do not fit standard bricks.

Do brands fit together?

Often yes, but not always. Clamp force and size tolerance differ. Try brands with a few bricks before you mix a whole set.

The difficulty level

We calculate it from piece count and minimum age: the more pieces, the higher the level. From age 14 it counts one level more, for toddler sets one less. The manufacturer can set its own value.

Edition size and end of sale

Only a few manufacturers say how many sets were built. We label every number as official, estimated or unknown.

Building instructions

We do not host instructions, we link to the manufacturer's page. That keeps them current and the rights with the manufacturer.

Where does the data come from?

From manufacturer data, from Rebrickable (CSV download, with attribution) and from community corrections. Every entry names its source.

Small quiz

1. How far apart are the studs in the standard grid?
2. What is the compatibility check for?
3. How do we handle edition sizes?
4. Where are building instructions kept?
